The Truth About “Shark Teeth”: Understanding Retained Baby Teeth

At Smiles University Pediatric Dentistry, we believe in providing clear, accurate information about your child’s dental development. Today, let’s discuss an important dental situation known as retained primary teeth, or what some playfully call “shark teeth.”

What Are “Shark Teeth”?

When permanent teeth emerge behind still-present baby teeth, it creates a temporary double row of teeth. While this might look concerning, it’s a dental situation that requires attention and proper evaluation.

When Do They Occur?

This situation typically happens between ages 5-7, most commonly with lower front teeth. It can also occur with upper front teeth or back molars. About 3-10% of children experience this condition.

Why Does This Happen?

Normally, as permanent teeth develop, they dissolve the roots of baby teeth (a process called resorption), causing them to loosen and fall out naturally. However, sometimes:

  • The baby tooth’s roots don’t dissolve properly
  • The permanent tooth emerges in a slightly incorrect position
  • The baby tooth remains firmly attached

Important Considerations

Unlike what some might suggest, retained baby teeth can cause problems if left unaddressed:

  • They may force permanent teeth to erupt in incorrect positions
  • This can lead to crowding and alignment issues
  • Poor alignment can affect bite development
  • The situation might require orthodontic correction if not addressed promptly

When to Seek Professional Help

Schedule an appointment if:

  • You notice permanent teeth emerging behind baby teeth
  • The baby tooth shows no signs of loosening
  • Your child complains of discomfort
  • You observe crowding or alignment issues

Treatment Options

Our pediatric dental team will evaluate each case individually. Common treatments include:

  • Monitoring the situation if the baby tooth is becoming loose
  • Gentle extraction of the baby tooth if necessary
  • Creating space for proper permanent tooth alignment
  • Implementing early interventional orthodontic treatment if needed

Prevention and Monitoring

Regular six-month check-ups are crucial for:

  • Tracking your child’s dental development
  • Identifying potential issues early
  • Ensuring proper tooth eruption sequence
  • Maintaining overall oral health
